Consumers, Producers and Decomposers

Today, the grade 4's talked about food chains.  We learned that there are different types of categories that organize the plants and animals in the world.  We saw how plants are producers and make the food for the rest of the planet.  (The plants get the energy from the sun.)  Next, we talked about First Consumers, who are animals that eat the plants.  Second Consumers eat the animals that eat the plants.  Third Consumers eat the animals that eat the animals that eat the plants!  Humans fit into all three categories because we are omnivores.

We also talked about what happens to the waste we have from left over food, for example, apple cores or banana peels.  We wanted to see just how this food decomposes in the earth.  We took some small pieces from our lunches that we thought would decompose and buried it in the small flower pots in the front of the school.  In one week, we will dig it up to see just how much has actually been broken down and decomposed.

Our School Ground is a Habitat?!

On Friday, we spent some more time working on Science. We talked about how plants, animals and humans interact on our playground. Many of us didn't realize that our school yard is actually a habitat!  It was an excellent opportunity to take a look at something we may sometimes take for granted in a completely new light. Here are some pictures.

Meet Mr. Pickles

Meet our new class pet, Mr. Pickles!  After participating in the democratic process, we finally came to a name!  It was an excellent chance to learn how to share our own ideas, listen to the ideas of others, and give constructive feedback!

How Do Animals and Humans Survive and Thrive?

We recently started our first unit in Science.  With the help of Ms. Bell, our Teacher Librarian, we will be learning about "How Animals and Humans Survive and Thrive".  This big idea incorporates the Grade 4 Cluster of Habitats and Communities and the Grade 5 Cluster, Maintaing a Healthy Body. We will be doing some activities as a whole class and some activities in smaller groups lead by the teachers.

Here are some snapshots from our work today!

Great team work, everyone!
