Happy Halloween!

It was Operation Halloween today. Mrs. Steinhoff was really scared, so scared. We got to have some treats. Grade 5's are learning about the human body and grade 4's are learning about animals. Today we worked on our dioramas to show our learning. - Sydney

Photos of Canada are needed!

Room 4 is learning all about about Canada.  In order for the students to make personal connections to the topic, our class will be creating a bulletin board of photos you and/or your family have taken in your travels across Canada.
These pictures can be either of the landscapes, animals, or special attractions from the province.  If you have not ever traveled outside of the province, please feel free to find pictures online that meet the above criteria.
Though students will receive all of their photos back, if it is an extra special photo and you only one copy, I suggest that you make a copy and send that to school instead of the original.
The only place we are currently NOT looking for is Manitoba.  We will be calling for pictures of Manitoba later in the year, so please be sure to capture any memories during your provincial travels.

Pumpkins at Operation Halloween!

I picked up the candles at Costco tonight, so these wonderful little jack-o-lanterns will look great tomorrow during Operation Halloween!  I can't wait to see them in the dark!  Thank you so much to Mrs . Drewry, Crystal and Summer who helped us out with the carving.  It really was a terrific day!

Pumpkinpalooza!

Today, we carved pumpkins in our classroom. We made different faces and they were all crazy-looking. After we carved the pumpkins, Mrs. Steinhoff handed out the pumpkin seeds she roasted last night. Of the salty, sweet and salty and all dressed varieties, all dressed was the winning flavour. Three words . . . Best. Day. Ever! Written by Room 4

Pumpkin Math

Today, Room 4 finally got to hollow out the pumpkins! We started by finding the height and diameter of each pumpkin, and then we weighed each one. (Thank you to Christine's Grandpa who lent us a scale!) We then scrapped out all the insides and counted the seeds. The total from all 6 pumpkins was over 3 000! All in all, it was a great hour of fun! Special thanks to our TCI student helper, Crystal, who helped us out! Stay tuned for pictures of our jack-o-lanterns tomorrow!!

Paws for Reading

Please check out www.scholastic.com/paws for our new home reading incentive.  Students have chosen to be part of either team Cat or Dog.  For every 20 minutes of reading they log, a new book is donated by Scholastic to schools of need across Canada and the United States.  Check back often to see which team is winning, and don't forget to log your minutes!

Tonight, I went to pick up the pumpkins for our Pumpkin Unit! We will be starting to use these pumpkins tomorrow, looking at height, length, and diameter. Stay tuned for pictures in the next few days!

Popcorn Popoff!

On Wednesday, October 17th, our class compared a variety of microwave popcorn. Using the design process, we set a variety of criteria to compare the types/flavours of popcorn, including popped vs unpopped, calories and grams of fats per serving, cost, and of course, taste! We learned that there are a variety of factors to consider when choosing foods to maintain a healthy body. We also used a variety of problem solving skills to accurately compare the different varieties. So which one was the winner? Ask your son/daughter about the experience and they'll be sure to tell you which brand was the overall winner as well as the brand they preferred most.

Pumpkin Carving

Room 4 will be participating in a special Pumpkin Unit starting next week.  If you have any pumpkin carving kits that are safe for student use, please send them to school.  We will be carving pumpkins on October 30th, so you will be able to get the kits back before you may need them yourself.  Another option is sending cookie cutters in Halloween shapes, as that works well too, but they may be wrecked after use, so don't send something that you would need back.  There are many options available at the dollar store.  Thank you!

Congratulations to all of the students in Room 4 who helped fundraise for Terry Fox.  So far, we have collected $260.50!  Way to go!
