Hate that Cat

After reading Sharon Creech's, Love that Dog, we decided to read the follow-up, Hate that Cat.  This book continues in the same poetic format as Love that Dog.  It often talks about alliteration, onomatopoeia, adjectives, adverbs, made-up words . . . all the things we are learning about in our poetry study.  Each "chapter" starts with the date, which also fits in well to our letter writing campaign we are doing this month.

Another two things Jack is beginning to use in Hate that Cat are similes and metaphors.  We've talked about how you can use these comparisons to make your writing more interesting for the reader.  Can you come up with a simile and metaphor?

  1. I like how you noticed all of the interesting word choices in Hate that Cat. It's a great book, Mrs. Steinhoff! We have been working on poems at home, too! Sometimes our poems rhyme, but other times they are free verse. These books remind us about our pets. 7 of us have cats and 13 of us have dogs, so we can relate to Jack, the main character in the story. Do you enjoy reading this story, Mrs. Steinhoff? If you could have any pet, what would you have?

  2. I really do enjoy reading these books. I like how the author makes you picture what has happened with so few words. I also like how it fits in perfectly with our I Love to Read activities. If I could have a pet, I would probably choose a cat, but we did have 2 cats before, and they both got sick and passed away. I would love to have a dog, but I think for my family, a dog would be too much work.

On another note, your next challenge is to write a comment back! What has been your favourite part of the book so far? Does this book remind you of anything in your life?

    2. Thanks for the comments, Sydney! I do like all the books we have been reading. I try to choose books that students will find interesting and that I enjoy as well! I sometimes think about writing books myself, but I am not sure what I would write about. Maybe as a class we should work to write a book together? What do you think? What kind of story could you imagine me writing?

    3. Hello, I really like all the books you have picked for us they are all very interesting. You pick really good books. I think you would write about our class, things we do, you, your kids, your family. Yes we should try to write a book together. It would be really fun and cool for us to try. It would be a really good learning experience for us.

I got to go but I will see you next time I come on the blog.

    1. Wow, Vika, Sydney and Kaynen! I absolutely love your comments!! Way to go! Vika, I see how you may have trouble with how much the main character, Jack, hates cats. I am wondering though, do you think he REALLY hates cats, or might it have something to do with what happened to Sky?

Sydney, I would love for you to bring your new poems to school! What do you like writing about best? I really liked your heart shape poem. Are those your favourite to write?

Kaynen, I am so happy to see you with your first post! Great job remembering all the criteria for a comment! I didn't know you had so many pets! That sounds like a busy household! If I had to pick between a fish or a cat, at this point I would probably choose a fish. I think my kids might like to have one. Can you recommend a good type of fish for young kids? I would need one that is very easy to take care of. Who cleans up after all of your animals at home? What are all their names?
